The Brief

We are looking for inventive pitch ideas that tell the world stories about UK people and culture. The idea is to discover British stories and innovative short factual films. Besides shooting reports, we also encourage correspondents to ask the general public questions (Vox Pops) in relation to their documentary. When writing your pitch think about why your story is unique to the UK, what contributors will you use, how you will shoot the documentary (for non filmmakers we can help with that) and how the story will progress. You will need to pitch your ideas based on the following themes (all ideas should be for a short documentary of 5-10 minutes):

Puberty

According to Wikipedia puberty is “the process of physical changes by which a child's body becomes an adult body capable of reproduction”. Well, that might be true, but it’s only half of the story. In the real world puberty often means TROUBLE, it’s the phase in life that is most feared by parents. The phase in which teenagers discover that they are no longer kids, but have a personality and a vision of their own. Problem is: they don’t know yet WHICH personality or opinion that exactly is. And so they start experimenting, protesting, and going against the grain. We’re looking for all kinds of stories that show teenagers in the midst of their puberty. Derailed teenagers that are trying to get back on track, parents and other people that try to teach them some discipline, and we’re also interested in nice local examples of typical ‘teenage’ subcultures where you live; the modern equivalents of the punk-scene in the 80’s.

Against the System / Off the grid / Protest

For this episode we are looking for stories about remarkable people who turn their back on ‘regular’ society in their country. Energetic people, who choose the lonely road of protest and resistance, preferably in an unconventional way. People that go against the grain and act totally different then the vast majority. These could also be people who decide to go ‘off the grid’ and live a life disconnected from the world. Please note that we are both interested in serious stories but also keen on stories with a humorist or quirky touch.

Neighbours quarrel

We’re doing an episode on conflicts between neighbours. We want to focus on small stories, because sometimes neighbours quarrel about seemingly futile things, but to them it seems like a matter of life and death. These conflicts can become vile and other neighbours or even police have to intervene. We would like you to show us both sides of the story, both their arguments. So preferably the conflict should be between two people or two households. Here’s an example: one farmer has dogs and the dog ate his neighbour’s chicken. Now the chicken farmer is angry, but the guy with the dogs is mad because his neighbour’s chickens are running all over his property. What are both their arguments and how will they be able to solve this problem?

Relationship advice

How do people keep their relationship going? What is the secret behind a marriage of 50 years? What do you do when things get tough and you’re in a marriage crisis? We’d like to know what local solutions there are for when a couple is suffering relationship problems, are in a crisis or are even splitting up. What do couples in your country do when one of them is cheating, or extremely jealous or is just not feeling in love anymore? Are there ways to keep them together? Are there people that dedicate themselves to solve these kind of problems? And who helps them in this process. The parents, relationship-experts, perhaps the head of the village? An episode about how to fix your relationship when things are going wrong.
